Journey For The Heart

Deep in the barracks of a Nazi concentration camp, Betsy ten Boom discovered, “There is no pit so deep, God is not deeper still.” Our family experienced the “deeper still” truths in the midst of our own torture chambers on cardiac floors in multiple children’s hospitals. From the moment of James’s birth, through a myriad of open heart surgeries and finally a heart transplant at the age of four, we clutched the powerful hand of God who proved Himself relentlessly trustworthy.

I invite you to join the journey as I recount James’s story through a series of audio podcasts in the upcoming weeks. As each free podcast is made available, you can listen to it on your computer, download it to your MP3 player, or subscribe to receive it automatically through iTunes. And after listening, please join the conversation on this Discussion page.

What are helpful things that families/friends can do for parents who have to separate themselves to take care of a child as you did? What doesn't help?

To the March 24th comment on how to help parents who have to separate themselves to care for a sick child...
First, I would pray for God to give that couple His strength and wisdom and peace. I would ask others to pray for them as well. I would ask God to send many people into their lives to shower them with love and compassion.
Then look for tangible acts of mercy to encourage them. You never tire of cards and notes with kind words to cheer a bruised heart. Stopping by for a short visit at the hospital and bringing along a small gift just shouts out, "I care about you and want to help carry your load." You cannot solve their problem but your loving presence reminds them in a significant way that they are not forgotten. You might be the vehicle God uses that particular day to lift those parents out of discouragement.
